What is PageRanking?
|
| PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, used
by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting
to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World
Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within
the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with
reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it
assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and
denoted by PR(E). The name "PageRank" is a trademark of Google, and
the PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999). However,
the patent is assigned to Stanford University and not to Google. Google
has exclusive license rights on the patent from Stanford University. The
university received 1.8 million shares of Google in exchange for use of
the patent; the shares were sold in 2005 for $336 million.

How Important is My Website PageRank?
|
| Simply put ... Page Rank Is Only As
Important As Google. First, Google's Page Rank
system goes from zero to ten, with 0 being lowest, 10 being highest. As
for how important Page Rank is...I would say, it's only as important as
Google is to you. Or, more specifically, it's only as important as
Google is to your website! Google ranks websites based on a scale from
0 to 10, measuring the "importance" of websites. There are people who
make an entire career out of analysing Google's analysis, and explaining
to people what their page rank means, and how to increase it. I'm not
one of those people.
So in sum ... Google measures how valuable
your website is, based on (basically) two things:
1. How many other sites are there that are linked to your site.
2. How "valuable" those other sites are based somewhat on their
pagerank.
The problem remains that the value of the other website is based on
its page rank! A site with a Page Ranking of 9 that links to your site
will impress Google a significantly more than a site with a Page Rank of
2 that is linking to you.
But how important is it? As I said, it's only as important as Google
is to your website. If the bulk of your web traffic comes from Google,
and your Page Rank drops, you're in trouble. On the other hand, if you
have a following that doesn't require a search engine to find your site,
then Google's Page Rank doesn't matter (as much). |
